概要 | Except for squamous cell tumors and malignant carcinomas, lesions that protrude into the esophagus are rare, and include benign and malignant tumors. Patients with esophageal protruding lesions present with fairly non-specific symptoms, including dysphagia, odynophagia, or chest pain. These lesions are often discovered incidentally when esophagography and endoscopy are performed. Although histopathological analysis is necessary to diagnose lesions that protrude into the esophagus, occasionally endoscopy cannot be performed because of patient conditions or inadequate specimens with ulceration or necrosis are obtained, making definitive diagnosis difficult. Esophagography permits assessment of the mucosal surface and lesion location and extension. Cross-sectional imaging, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are useful to evaluate invasion and metastasis. Characteristic imaging findings of some lesions that protrude into the esophagus can facilitate diagnosis and lead to prompt treatment, and radiologists must recognize these. Here we discuss and illustrate, with representative images, the main features of esophageal protruding lesions. |
